Cement Plant Conveyor Challenges
Cement plants have an unusually diverse range of conveyor applications —?from cool limestone quarrying through high-temperature clinker handling. A single cement plant may require 5—? different belt specifications. Using the wrong belt type is extremely common and results in premature failures across the facility.
Belt Specification by Cement Plant Application
| Application | Material | Temp | Belt Grade | Cover Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Limestone quarry/crusher | Limestone, 0—?00mm | Ambient | Grade M or W | 8—?2mm top |
| Raw material feed | Limestone + clay + sand | Ambient | Grade M | 6—?mm top |
| Coal conveying | Coal, 0—?0mm | Ambient | Grade M or D (oil) | 5—?mm top |
| Clinker from kiln outlet | Hot clinker 150—?50°C | 150—?50°C | T2 or T3 | 8—?2mm top |
| Clinker cooler discharge | Cooled clinker 80—?50°C | 80—?50°C | T1 or T2 | 6—?0mm top |
| Cement mill feed | Clinker + gypsum | <60°C | Grade M | 5—?mm top |
| Cement dispatch | Bagged/bulk cement | Ambient | Grade M | 4—?mm top |
| Enclosed gallery belt | Various | Ambient | FR Grade M | Per duty |
Critical Application: Clinker Conveying
Fresh clinker from the rotary kiln discharge is the most demanding application in a cement plant. Kiln outlet clinker temperatures of 200—?00°C are common. The belt cover must withstand these temperatures continuously while also resisting the significant abrasion from sharp clinker nodules.
⚠️ T1 Belt on Clinker Conveyor = Guaranteed Failure
T1 belts are rated for maximum 100°C continuous. Cement clinker from a kiln outlet is typically 200—?00°C. Using T1 for clinker will result in cover softening, tackiness, and rapid degradation within weeks. Minimum specification for kiln outlet clinker: T2 (150°C) and preferably T3 (200°C). Always measure actual clinker temperature before specifying.
Coal Mill Circuit Special Requirements
Coal conveying in cement plants requires consideration of oil contamination (from coal mill lubricants and spillage) and potential flame retardancy for enclosed areas:
- Grade D (oil-resistant) covers for belts in coal mill areas where oil contamination is possible
- Flame-retardant specification if the conveyor runs through enclosed building sections
- Antistatic properties where coal dust explosion risk exists
Clinker Cooler Belt Selection
Clinker after passing through the cooler is typically 80—?50°C —?cooler than kiln outlet but still requiring heat-resistant specification. The abrasiveness of cooled clinker is similar to hot clinker. Recommended specification: T1 (if consistently below 100°C) or T2 (if temperature can reach 100—?50°C), with Grade W abrasion properties and 8—?0mm top cover.
