Coal Washing Plant Conveyor Environment
Coal preparation (washing) plants are wet, dusty environments where conveyor belts face specific challenges: high moisture exposure, coal fines contamination, antistatic requirements throughout, and the need to handle both clean coal and reject/tailings streams. The belt specification for a coal washing plant differs significantly from a dry coal handling facility.
Key Environmental Factors
- Moisture: All belts in a preparation plant should be considered wet-duty. Moisture enters the belt carcass through cut covers, mechanical fasteners, and splice edges, causing ply delamination.
- Coal dust: Fine coal dust permeates everywhere. Combined with moisture, it creates adhesive paste that accumulates on return rollers and belt undersides.
- Magnetite contamination: Heavy media plants use magnetite in the process circuit. Magnetite is highly abrasive if it contaminates the belt.
Carcass Selection: EP vs NN
Polyamide (nylon) is moisture-absorbent β?an NN carcass absorbs water and swells, losing stiffness and developing increased elongation. Polyester (EP warp) does not absorb moisture. For coal washing plants, EP carcass is strongly preferred:
- EP warp polyester: negligible moisture absorption, stable dimensions
- NN nylon: absorbs moisture, swells, elongates β?requires more frequent tension adjustment
- Specify: EP fabric, not NN, for all belts in wet washing plant environments
Belt Specification by Application
| Application | Recommended Belt Spec | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Raw coal feed to washery | EP315/3, Grade M, 6+3mm, AS | Antistatic, moisture resistant carcass |
| Clean coal product | EP250/2, Grade M, 5+3mm, AS | Antistatic, smooth cover for cleanliness |
| Reject/tailings conveyor | EP250/2, Grade M, 5+3mm, AS | Chemical resistance to process water |
| Magnetite recovery | EP315/3, Grade W, 6+3mm, AS | Grade W for magnetite abrasion |
| Stockpile reclaim | EP400/3, Grade M, 7+3mm, AS | Wider belt, higher tonnage |
β?"AS" = Antistatic: Never Forget This
Coal dust is explosive. Every belt in a coal preparation plant must be antistatic β?surface resistivity β?Γ10βΈβ? This applies even to outdoor belts, since coal dust migrates throughout the facility. Always include "AS" (antistatic) or specify "surface and volume resistivity β?Γ10βΈβ? in every belt purchase order for a coal preparation plant, without exception.
Belt Filter Press Applications
Belt filter presses use specially designed filter belts β?these are not standard conveyor belts. Filter belts are woven fabric (polyester or polypropylene) with a specific permeability rating. When specifying filter belts for coal slurry dewatering:
- Permeability: 200β?00 CFM depending on particle size and required cake moisture
- Material: polyester monofilament for coal slurry (chemical resistance, dimensional stability)
- Seam type: clipper seam for ease of replacement; spiral seam for longer life
