Why Splice Inspection Is Critical
The belt splice is always the weakest point in a conveyor system. A splice that is starting to fail gives visible warning signs weeks before complete failure β?but only if you are looking for them. Catching a deteriorating splice early allows planned replacement during scheduled maintenance. Missing the warning signs results in catastrophic belt failure, production loss, and emergency replacement costs that can be 5β?0Γ higher.
Splice Failure Warning Signs
- Edge lifting: The cover rubber at the splice ends lifts away from the carcass β?visible as a raised lip or gap at the splice edge
- Cover cracking at splice steps: Transverse cracks at the step transitions indicate fatigue from repeated bending
- Ply separation visible: A gap visible between fabric plies at the splice edge β?this is an emergency sign
- Belt surface irregularity: A thump or vibration felt/heard as the splice passes over idlers indicates a splice that is no longer flat
- Splice area tracking differently: If the belt tracks to one side only when the splice is at a particular idler, the splice is not square
Inspection Schedule
| Inspection Type | Frequency | Method | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator visual check | Daily | Visual during belt walkdown | Operator |
| Hands-on splice inspection | Monthly | Belt stopped, manual flex test at splice edges | Maintenance tech |
| Full splice documentation | Quarterly | Photo record, thickness measurement, edge condition rating | Maintenance supervisor |
| After emergency stop | Immediately after event | Full inspection β?emergency stops cause high tension spikes | Maintenance tech |
| After belt slip event | Immediately after event | Check for heat damage to splice cover rubber | Maintenance tech |
Hands-On Splice Inspection Procedure
- Stop belt and lock out/tag out drive
- Position splice on a flat idler section (not over a pulley)
- Flex the belt at the splice ends β?try to open any gap between cover and carcass
- Run fingers along all splice edges feeling for lifted lips or loose cover rubber
- Check splice squareness β?measure distance from splice line to belt edge on both sides
- Record condition: Good / Monitor / Repair Required / Replace
- Photograph any defects for trend tracking
β οΈ Do Not Operate With These Conditions
Replace the splice immediately if you find: any ply separation visible at edges; cover lifting more than 10mm at splice ends; transverse cracks deeper than 50% of cover thickness at splice steps; or any condition where the splice area feels significantly softer or harder than the adjacent belt.
