Phosphate Mining Conveyor Challenges
Phosphate rock mining and processing presents a combination of challenges that span multiple belt specification categories: moderately abrasive ore requiring Grade W covers, significant moisture content in many deposits causing sticking and carryback problems, chemical exposure in the downstream processing circuit, and in some operations, elevated temperatures in calcination and drying processes.
Phosphate Rock Properties
| Property | Typical Value | Belt Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Abrasiveness Index (AI) | 150β?50 g/t | Grade W recommended |
| Bulk density | 1.3β?.7 t/mΒ³ | Standard belt width calculation |
| Moisture content (ROM) | 8β?0% | Sticking tendency, need good scrapers |
| Lump size (crusher feed) | 0β?00mm | Adequate belt width required |
| Clay content (some deposits) | 5β?5% | High sticking tendency |
Wet Phosphate: The Sticking Problem
Phosphate rock with significant clay content (common in sedimentary deposits in Morocco, Western Sahara, and Florida) has high moisture content and exceptional sticking tendency. Wet phosphate clay bonds strongly to rubber belt covers and return rollers, causing severe carryback.
Solutions:
- High-efficiency primary scraper (tungsten carbide blade) immediately after head pulley
- Secondary scraper on return strand
- Self-cleaning (spiral or disc) return rollers
- Consider low-surface-energy cover compound for the belt underside
- Belt wash system for severe sticking cases
Chemical Processing Circuit Requirements
Downstream of the mine, phosphate rock is processed with sulfuric acid to produce phosphoric acid and fertilisers. Conveyor belts in the processing plant are exposed to:
- Sulfuric acid splash (pH 1β?)
- Phosphoric acid (HβPOβ? in wet process areas
- Ammonium compounds in fertiliser blending areas
For all belts in direct chemical contact: Grade D (NBR compound) is required. For indirect exposure (occasional splash), Grade M with extra cover thickness may be acceptable in less critical areas.
Belt Specification by Application
| Application | Grade | Cover Thickness | Special Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROM ore crusher feed | W | 10β?4mm top | Large lump capacity |
| Crushed phosphate | W | 6β?0mm top | Good scraper system |
| Wet beneficiation feed | W or M | 6β?mm top | EP carcass (moisture resistance) |
| Phosphoric acid area | D (NBR) | 6β?mm top | Chemical resistance essential |
| Fertiliser blending | D or M | 5β?mm top | Low contamination risk preferred |
