Supplying DRC Mining Operations
The Democratic Republic of Congo is the world's largest producer of cobalt and one of Africa's largest copper producers. The Copperbelt in Katanga (Haut-Katanga) Province hosts operations by Glencore (Katanga Mining / KCC), Ivanhoe Mines (Kamoa-Kakula), Freeport-McMoRan (Tenke Fungurume), and several Chinese-operated mines. The scale of DRC's copper-cobalt sector is significant and growing.
Elephant Rubber (Yexiang Hebei Conveying Machinery Co., Ltd.) manufactures conveyor belts, polyurethane screen panels, and rubber liners in Hebei, China, and exports to DRC mining buyers.
Key Mining Operations in DRC
Kamoa-Kakula β Ivanhoe Mines / Zijin Mining
Kamoa-Kakula in Lualaba Province is one of the world's largest copper discoveries and is now in production, ramping up to become a top-tier copper producer. It is a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining (Chinese), and the DRC government. The Chinese involvement means Chinese supplier documentation is well understood in this procurement context.
Large-scale underground copper mining with surface processing. EP belts for underground ore handling, steel cord belts and EP belts for surface concentrator conveyors, PU screen panels for mill circuit classification.
KCC (Katanga Mining / Glencore)
Glencore's Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) and associated assets in Lualaba Province are significant copper and cobalt producers. These operations use a range of EP belts for ore handling and chemical-resistant covers and liners in the cobalt processing areas.
Tenke Fungurume (CMOC / Freeport)
Now owned by CMOC (China Molybdenum Company), Tenke Fungurume is a major copper-cobalt operation. As a Chinese-operated mine, CMOC's procurement processes are familiar with Chinese supplier standards and documentation.
Artisanal and Small Mining
DRC also has significant artisanal cobalt mining. This sector generally does not use formal conveyor belt systems.
Technical Requirements in DRC
Cobalt processing areas. Cobalt hydrometallurgical processing involves acid leach and solvent extraction circuits. Belt covers and liners in areas where cobalt-bearing liquids may contact rubber should be specified with chemical-resistant compounds. Buyers should describe their specific process chemistry so we can recommend the appropriate compound.
Tropical climate. DRC's equatorial climate means year-round high humidity and rainfall, particularly in the western parts of the country. Even in Katanga (which is somewhat drier), tropical-grade cover compounds are appropriate.
Remote operations. Many DRC mines are far from the nearest major port. Durban to Lubumbashi is approximately 3,000km by road. Dar es Salaam to Lubumbashi via Zambia is approximately 2,000km. Supply chain planning needs to account for these distances.

Shipping to DRC
DRC is landlocked in the central part of Africa. Main supply routes:
- Durban β road/rail through Zambia β Lubumbashi: Approximately 3,000km. Most common route for Katanga Province.
- Dar es Salaam β TAZARA railway β Zambia β DRC: Alternative for Katanga.
- Matadi Port (DRC Atlantic coast) β road to Kinshasa and beyond: For western DRC, though very long road distance to Katanga.
Total transit time from China to Lubumbashi area: approximately 40β55 days depending on routing.
Frequently Asked Questions β DRC Buyers
Do you supply to CMOC (Tenke Fungurume) or Zijin/Ivanhoe (Kamoa-Kakula)? Yes. We can supply to Chinese-operated mining companies in DRC and provide documentation compatible with their procurement processes. Contact us with your specific requirements.
What chemical-resistant covers do you offer for cobalt processing? We offer EPDM compound covers for mild acid environments and nitrile (NBR) covers for oil-adjacent applications. For cobalt hydrometallurgical areas, please describe your specific process chemistry β the right compound depends on what the belt will actually contact.
What is the realistic lead time to Lubumbashi? Production (EP belts): 15β20 days. Shipping to Durban: 18β22 days. Road Durban to Lubumbashi: 7β10 days. Total: approximately 45β55 days. Plan belt replacements well in advance.
Do you have a DRC distributor? Not currently. We supply direct and through trading companies with DRC experience.
