Chinese Manufacturer Exporting to Peruvian Mining

Peru is the world's second-largest copper producer and a top-five gold producer. Its mining sector — dominated by operations in the Andes at altitudes of 3,000–5,000 meters — operates some of the most technically demanding conveyor systems in the world. Cerro Verde, Las Bambas, Antamina, Constancia, Toromocho, and Toquepala are all world-scale copper operations requiring heavy-duty conveyor infrastructure.

Elephant Rubber (Yexiang Hebei Conveying Machinery Co., Ltd.) manufactures and exports conveyor belts, polyurethane screen panels, and rubber wear components to Peruvian mining operators, maintenance contractors, and industrial distributors.

Peru's Major Mining Operations and Belt Requirements

Copper Mining — The Andes

Peru's copper mines are concentrated in the southern and central Andes. Each presents specific conveyor challenges:

Cerro Verde (Arequipa) — Freeport-McMoRan / Buenaventura / Sumitomo One of the world's largest copper mines. Located at 2,600m elevation. Massive in-pit and overland conveyor systems handling copper porphyry ore. Belt requirement: steel cord ST2500–ST4000, widths to 2200mm, M24 and DIN Z abrasion covers.

Las Bambas (Apurímac) — MMG Limited High-altitude operation at 3,900–4,600m. Extreme temperature variation (-15°C to +20°C). EP and steel cord belts with cold-flexible covers. One of the highest-altitude large copper mines in the world.

Antamina (Ancash) — BHP / Glencore / Teck / Mitsubishi Copper-zinc skarn deposit at 4,300m. Complex ore chemistry with zinc and molybdenum byproducts. Belts for copper and zinc concentrate handling require chemical-resistant covers.

Constancia (Cusco) — Hudbay Minerals Copper-molybdenum operation. EP belts for crushing and concentrator circuits.

Toromocho (Junín) — Chinalco Chinese-operated copper mine. EP and steel cord belts; Chinalco's procurement teams are familiar with Chinese supplier documentation.

Gold Mining — La Libertad, Cajamarca, Puno

Yanacocha (Newmont / Buenaventura), Pierina, and Lagunas Norte are Peru's major gold operations. High-altitude oxidized ore conveying requires UV-resistant, cold-flexible belt covers and dust-resistant idler configurations.

Zinc and Silver — Central Andes

Volcan, Milpo/Nexa, and Pan American Silver operate polymetallic operations in the central Andes requiring EP belts and PU screen panels for complex ore sorting and sizing.

Belt Challenges in Peruvian Mining

Extreme altitude. Most Peruvian copper and gold mines operate above 3,500m. At these altitudes, UV radiation intensity is 40–60% higher than at sea level. Belt covers without UV stabilizers degrade rapidly. All Elephant Rubber covers for Andean supply include UV stabilizers as standard.

Temperature extremes. Andean nights drop to -10°C or below even in summer. Daytime temperatures can reach +25°C. This 35°C daily swing causes rubber to fatigue if the compound lacks cold-temperature flexibility. Our cold-flex covers maintain flexibility to -30°C.

Altitude and belt tension. Lower air density at high altitude slightly reduces cooling of drive motors and electrical equipment, requiring belt designers to account for thermal derating. Our steel cord belts are supplied with full tension and thermal specifications.

Seismic activity. Peru is highly seismic. Belt splice quality and carcass integrity are critical for reliability in a seismic environment.
