Why Lagging Matters
Drive pulley lagging is the friction interface between the drive pulley and the conveyor belt. It transmits the drive torque from the pulley to the belt. Without lagging, a steel pulley surface would slip against the belt underside at almost any significant load. The wrong lagging choice results in belt slip, accelerated wear, and potential fire risk.

Ceramic Lagging: When It Is Worth the Premium
Ceramic lagging consists of alumina ceramic tiles (92—?5% Al₂O—? bonded to a rubber backing layer. The ceramic surface provides high friction even when wet, and exceptional wear resistance. Cost is typically 4—?× more than rubber lagging.
Specify ceramic lagging when:
- Belt runs through water (dewatering areas, tropical mines, underground sumps)
- High-tension conveyor where belt slip would be catastrophic
- Drive pulley is in a position difficult to access for lagging replacement
- Previous rubber lagging wore out in less than 18 months
- Belt slip history exists at the drive pulley
