Underground Coal Mine Belt Requirements
Underground coal mine conveyor belts must satisfy safety requirements that do not apply to surface conveyors. These are non-negotiable regulatory requirements in all major coal mining countries. Selecting a belt for underground use requires satisfying all of the following criteria simultaneously.
Mandatory Requirement 1: Flame Retardancy
The belt must pass the applicable national flame retardant standard for underground mines:
- Europe, Middle East, Africa: EN ISO 340 (drum friction test + gallery flame propagation test)
- Australia: AS 4606 (more stringent than EN ISO 340)
- USA: MSHA 30 CFR Part 18 (requires MSHA Approval Number printed on belt)
- China: MT 914 (MA certification required)
- South Africa: SANS 971
Mandatory Requirement 2: Anti-Static Properties
The belt must dissipate static electricity to prevent spark formation. Maximum permissible surface electrical resistivity: —?×10—?Ω. This is tested separately from flame retardancy and must both be certified.

Cover Specification for Coal Mine
- Grade: Minimum Grade M. Grade W if coal contains significant rock/stone contamination
- Top cover thickness: Minimum 5mm for gate roads; 6—?mm for panel conveyors; 8—?0mm for main belts
- Bottom cover thickness: Minimum 3mm
- FR compound: Must be throughout full cover thickness —?not a surface coating

The belt specification alone is not sufficient. The complete underground conveyor system must also include:

- Pull-wire emergency stops at maximum 30m intervals
- Locked-out isolation procedure for maintenance
